NGF Pioneers Tagging Technology

NGF EUROPE's automotive customers can now access full product information for each individual spool of glass fibre cord they receive, from a radio frequency identification tag attached to it.

NGFE has been using RFID tagging to track production at its Lea Green site for about four years but is the first glass fibre company in Europe to extend the facility to its customers.

Linked to the site's other computer systems, the tags automatically upload information from every stage of the product's journey through the factory. The latest development, launched in October, has added quality test certification details to the information encoded to the tag.

The 55mm x 25mm tags can carry the equivalent of eight A4 pages of binary code. They are read using a handheld scanner and unlike other forms of labelling, are decipherable even through the multiple layers of plastic in which the spools are wrapped before shipment.
